All users of Norton GoBack should read the following before
installation.

Before installation, and during the course of using the
computer on which Norton GoBack is installed, it may be necessary
to understand and apply information from this document.

Norton GoBack adds an underlying safety net to the use of your
computer. However, it is not a replacement for a recommended backup system,
such as Norton Ghost. In many situations, Norton GoBack will be able
to restore your entire computer or a specific file that would otherwise be
lost. However, this ability should not be assumed. Norton GoBack's
restorative ability is a function of, among other things, the
intensity of disk usage and the amount of disk space allocated
for tracking.

Norton GoBack can only be correctly uninstalled using Add/Remove
Programs. Do NOT allow any third party utilities to monitor
the uninstall process or it will not complete successfully.

The following are important issues relating to the use
of Norton GoBack.

- Before installation -

Before installing any major application, including Norton GoBack, it's
always a good idea to backup your entire system.

- Operating system compatibility and upgrading -

Norton GoBack is compatible with all versions of Microsoft
Windows 98, Windows Me (Millennium Edition), Windows 2000, and Windows XP.
Norton GoBack is not compatible with other operating systems.

Norton GoBack is not compatible with some advanced features of
Windows 2000/XP that are usually associated with servers. Examples include
multiple processors, volume sets, dynamic disks, and striping.

When upgrading or changing operating systems, Norton GoBack
should first be disabled. Once disabled, the new operating
system should be installed or upgraded. Norton GoBack
should then be enabled again.

- Restore your disk drive from the boot menu -

If your computer is unable to start Windows, you can perform a Disk Drive Restore before
Windows starts. While restarting your computer, press the spacebar as soon as you see the
the Norton GoBack Boot Screen appear. From the menu, click Restore Drive. Select a time
and click Restore. A message displays asking if you are sure you want to restore your disk drive.
Click Yes. Your computer restarts and your disk drive is restored to the selected time.

If you use Norton AntiVirus, click LiveUpdate and make sure your virus software is
up-to-date. If you use other anti-virus protection, see the instructions that came with it.

- Dual booting -

Dual booting is only supported for the following configuration:

Only two operating systems are installed and one
is Windows 9x/Me and the other is Windows 2000/XP.

The Microsoft supplied boot manager is the only
boot manager being used.

Norton GoBack must be installed once for each operating
system while disabling (not uninstalling) Norton GoBack between
installs.

For the Norton GoBack 4.0 Electronic Software Download (ESD) you will
need to download the ESD product from within each operating
system for the installation to complete successfully.

system, please visit our knowledgebase at:

- Using disk compression utilities -

Norton GoBack is fully compatible with file level and/or folder level compression,
such as that provided by PKZIP, WINZIP, and ARJ. Norton GoBack is also compatible
with the file and folder compression built into Window 2000/XP. Disk and/or partition
level compressed drives are not supported by Norton GoBack (such as DriveSpace,
DoubleSpace, and others). Most major brands of Dynamic Disk Overlays (DDOs) are supported
under Windows 98/Me. They are not supported nor recommended for Norton GoBack 4.0
installations under Windows 2000/XP. Examples include Ontrack's Disk Manager and
StorageSoft's EZ-Drive.

- Drive support and device drivers -

Norton GoBack does not protect floppy disks, Zip drives and other other removable
media. Norton GoBack protects all disk drives that are recognized by the basic
input/output system (BIOS). If the disk drive is not recognized during the initial
BIOS identification phase of the boot process, or if it requires special device
drivers, Norton GoBack will not be enabled for that drive. Norton GoBack,
installed on your desktop computer does not protect data on your laptop.
We recommend a copy of Norton GoBack on every computer system that you use.

- Minimum History Buffer Size for NTFS partition -

Norton GoBack selects optimal history buffer size in Express install that is
appropriate for most users. Advanced users might choose Custom install to define
the history buffer size themselves. For the NTFS partition, depending on the size of the
free space available, the system might not allow the set up of a history buffer size
larger than 60% of the available free space. Due to the location of the backup copy on
the NTFS partition, the size selected must be smaller. An error message will display and
guides you to a maximum history buffer size calculated by the Norton GoBack. If the free
storage space is larger than 20 GB, this problem should not occur.

- Using the clock in Advanced Disk Drive Restore and Disk Drive Compare -

If you change the time on the clock, close and reopen the window to display
accurate time stamps.

- Using AutoBack in Safe Mode -

Norton GoBack continues to protect your computer, even under Windows Safe Mode.
However, while in Safe Mode, it is recommended to disable the AutoBack feature in
order to avoid a possible system freeze. You can disable AutoBack from the boot
menu (press the spacebar during system startup).

- Windows System Restore in Windows Me and Windows XP -

Norton GoBack is compatible with the Windows System Restore feature in Windows Me
and Windows XP. On a Windows Me system, when Norton GoBack is installed, a Norton
GoBack message will be displayed informing you that it will disable System Restore
and make itself the default restore program. You can re-enable System Restore if you
wish. On a Windows XP system, when Norton GoBack is installed, System Restore will
NOT be disabled. In either case, if you choose to keep Windows System Restore enabled
while installing Norton GoBack, any attempt to roll back your system to a System Restore
Point created PRIOR to the Norton GoBack installation might result in a fatal system error
(blue screen). It is recommended to delete all System Restore Points before your Norton GoBack
installation. Or, disable Norton GoBack before you use System Restore. For a System
Restore Point created after installation of Norton GoBack, you do not need to disable
Norton GoBack for a system restore. We recommend using Norton GoBack to perform
this type of activity because of the advanced features and capabilities.

- Obtaining optimal technical support -

In some situations, technical support may require you to boot
from a floppy diskette. It is suggested that you create a bootable
floppy disk and copy the file gb_prog.exe to it. If there
is not enough available space on your boot floppy,
the gb_prog.exe file can be copied onto a separate
floppy disk. This file is located by default in
c:\program files\Norton GoBack.

Other recommended readings are found in the Norton GoBack user's guide or by selecting
Help from within the Norton GoBack program.
